One in four of the adult population in the UK has had some form of poor credit history.
If you have been in financial trouble at some stage and have arrears, a
County Court Judgment (
CCJ) or bankruptcy you may find it
difficult to get a credit card.
When you apply for a credit card your creditworthiness is usually checked.
The card issuer will use one of the two major credit reference agencies, Experian and Equifax.
If you have a poor credit history you are likely to be assigned a poor
credit rating and may be refused a credit card by some providers.
However there are some credit card providers who offer cards to people
who have a poor credit history and who may have been refused a card in
the past.
The interest rates for people with a poor credit history are higher than
the headline interest rates as providers regard people with a poor
credit history as a greater risk. However if you pay the monthly
payments on time, this will help you rebuild or strengthen your credit
rating and in time you'll be able to apply for cards with lower rates of
interest.
